Crystal Field Theory only considers ligands as point charges which is similar to sigma bonding. It does not take into account pi interactions between ligand orbitals and metal orbitals. To understand why you can have different colors with the same geometries, we must consider Ligand Field Theory which considers the complexities of metal-ligand interactions and discusses both sigma and pi interactions between orbitals (see below). | |
